Who Is This For
The Level 2 NVQ in Painting and Decorating is aimed at individuals working in the painting and decorating trade who are looking to become qualified. It is ideal for apprentices, trainees or experienced professionals who want to formalise their skills in tasks such as surface preparation, painting, wallpapering and decorative finishes. This qualification is suited for those seeking to enhance their career prospects, demonstrate their competence and achieve a nationally recognised certification in the painting and decorating industry.
Mandatory Units
Learners must complete the six mandatory units
- Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
- Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
- Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
- Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace
- Preparing surfaces for painting and/or decorating in the workplace
- Applying surface coatings by brush and roller in the workplace
Optional Units
Learners can choose to take additional units but they do not form part of the core qualification
- Hang wallcoverings (standard and foundation papers) in the workplace
- Hanging non standard width wallcoverings in the workplace
- Applying coatings by the air spray method in the workplace
- Producing and applying complex stencils in the workplace
- Installing coving and decorative mouldings in the workplace
- Applying coatings to produce textured finishes in the workplace
- Producing broken colour effects in the workplace
- Producing stencil designs using pre-cut stencil plates in the workplace

All Level 2 NVQs from the UK Skills Academy lead to a Blue CSCS card which is the certification that allows you to show your employer that you are qualified and have the knowledge and expertise to conduct yourself on-site in a safe and responsible manner. CSCS cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on-site.
Eligibility
- 19+ Years Old
- Live or Work in England (Business address can be out of England as long as the work is in England – we will need evidence)
- 3 months working in the trade for Level 2 and 6 months for Level 3
- You must be working in the trade you are applying for now – you must be able to demonstrate via assessment.
Duration
Our NVQs are flexible to work around you and the trade you are currently working in. You will be registered for 8-10 weeks and your assessor will collect a range of evidence from your workplace, work with you on assessments and will require your knowledge workbook to be completed in the first 4 weeks.

You could be eligible to receive up to £600 back upon completion if you are registered with CITB.
